Return to Blasphemous Bill
Remembering Jean Shepherd
In 1967 and 1968 when my submarine was undergoing a yard period and upgrade at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut I began listening to WOR radio. At that time they had an exceptional bunch broadcasting from that New York City radio station. On the way home in the evening, driving up I-95, "Bob and Ray" could always be relied upon to ease the trip. But the greatest by far of the WOR lineup was Jean Shepherd.
As I put together the "Blasphemous Bill" page I recalled how Shepherd would occasionally do a reading of it. His rendition would literally glue me to the radio. Behind that great radio voice he would have a honky-tonk piano track playing the kind of music one might hear when "whoopin' it up in the Malemute Saloon".
So I became curious about whatever happened to Jean Shepherd. Did a net-search and am saddened to learn of his recent death in October this year (1999).
